The New Hampshire Humane Society (NHHS), has a long and compassionate history of helping those in need. The organization was founded in 1900 by M. Jennie Kendall as the Women’s Humane Society. It originally worked to improve the lives of women, children, and animals in Nashua, NH. Over time, NHHS evolved to focus solely on animal welfare, continuing its founder’s vision with a modern emphasis on kindness.

Today, NHHS is one of the most successful adoption centers in New England. They have a consistent 90% adoption rate, significantly above the national average of 16%. Since the facility opened in 2006, thousands of animals have found loving homes, making NHHS a leader in animal rescue and adoption.

Meet the Adoptable Pets

Each animal at NHHS has a unique story and personality, and the staff work tirelessly to ensure every adoption is a thoughtful match between pet and family. Here are some of the friendly faces:

Beauty

Beauty the catFemale | 3 years, 8 months

Beauty is a gentle soul with a quiet, affectionate nature. She has a soft purr, loves head scratches, and delights in curling up on cozy blankets. Beauty thrives in a peaceful home and would do best without dogs.

Oreo

Oreo the catMale | 4 years, 8 months |

Adoption Fee: $125

Oreo is a reserved and thoughtful companion who prefers quiet corners and gentle affection. While he may initially seek solitude under a bed or blanket, he warms up with patience and kindness, revealing a sweet and loving nature. He’s an excellent fit for a calm home where he can come out of his shell at his own pace.

Diamond

Diamond the catFemale | 5 years, 2 months | Adoption Fee: $125

This bold, confident feline knows she’s special and expects to be treated accordingly. She loves sunbathing, being pampered, and indulging in treats. Diamond isn’t shy about expressing herself! She’s got attitude and heart in equal measure. Perfect for someone who appreciates a cat with charisma and style.

Jagger

Jagger the dog

Male | 1 year, 5 months | Adoption Fee: $350

Jagger is a sweet, playful dog with a sensitive side. He enjoys belly rubs and following his favorite person everywhere. Because he’s still learning to navigate a big world, Jagger needs a quiet, predictable home. He can be nervous around loud noises and unfamiliar situations, but with time and patient training, he will blossom into a loyal, loving companion.

The NHHS Adoption Process

NHHS takes great care to ensure that each adoption is the right fit for both the animal and the adopter. Interested adopters must first complete an application online at NHHumane.org. A member of the NHHS team will then reach out to schedule a visit and discuss available pets, including any behavioral or medical considerations.

Appointments are required Sunday through Wednesday. Walk-ins are welcome Thursday through Saturday from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. During your visit, you’ll receive one-on-one guidance to help you find the perfect companion.

If you meet your match and the pet has been medically and behaviorally cleared, same-day adoptions are available. Included in the adoption is:

A full medical history, including vaccinations, spay/neuter status, and microchip.

A sample of the pet’s current food to ease the transition.

Any toys, blankets, or bedding the animal is attached to.

Educational resources to support the transition from shelter to home.

Rescue fees help offset the cost of care and services. Refunds are considered only in special cases and at the discretion of NHHS.

A Mission Rooted in Compassion

The mission of NHHS extends far beyond adoptions. It is about second chances and advocacy. NHHS provides a safe haven for abandoned, lost, or surrendered animals, and speaks for those who cannot speak for themselves. Through community education and services, they promote responsible pet ownership and strengthen the bond between people and animals.

Their work is made possible entirely through donations. NHHS receives no government or state funding. Every dollar donated goes directly toward care, shelter, medical treatment, and finding forever homes.
