As March transitioned New Hampshire from deep winter into early spring, it also brought a wave of impactful local stories. From the bittersweet closure of a beloved animal shelter, the arrival of a national fast-food favorite, and a celebration of local art and creativity—here are three stories you’ll want to catch up on.
Franklin Animal Shelter to Close Amid Financial Struggles
After more than two decades of service, the Franklin Animal Shelter announced it will close its doors due to significant financial difficulties. A longstanding refuge for abandoned and stray animals, the shelter—run by the Granite State Animal League—cited rising veterinary costs and a drop in public donations as the primary reasons for the closure.
Despite increasing its municipal support this year, city officials were not made aware of the shelter’s financial situation until the public announcement. In the shelter’s final weeks, adoption fees were waived, and a handful of animals—including dogs like Merlin and Koda—were placed for adoption in hopes of finding homes before closure.
UPDATE: The New Hampshire Humane Society (NHHS) in Laconia is now stepping in to support pet adoption, surrender, and community outreach services in the Franklin area. NHHS has committed to continuing the shelter’s mission through low-cost medical clinics, food assistance, and rehoming efforts. Residents are encouraged to visit nhhumane.org for resources and information.

Raising Cane’s Makes Its New Hampshire Debut
The cult-favorite chicken finger chain, Raising Cane’s, officially opened its first New Hampshire location on March 11 in Manchester. The restaurant now occupies the former CJ’s Great West Grill location at 782 South Willow Street.
The grand opening was a community celebration, featuring live entertainment, giveaways, a ribbon-cutting with Mayor Jay Ruais, and even a visit from Fungo, the Fisher Cats mascot. Early risers were treated to a “Lucky 20” drawing for free Cane’s for a year, along with exclusive swag and free meals. The menu stays true to the brand’s roots, and includes chicken fingers, crinkle-cut fries, Texas toast, and their famous Cane’s Sauce.
Raising Cane’s joins a growing list of national restaurants expanding into the New England region—and judging by the long lines and social media buzz, it’s already made a flavorful impression. Visit raisingcanes.com for the full menu and location info.

Concord Chamber Opens Call for Artists for 8th Annual Sculpture Exhibit
The Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with the City of Concord, is inviting regional sculptors to submit their work for the 8th Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit. This beloved program transforms Concord into a walkable public gallery and reflects the city’s commitment to the arts and cultural engagement.
Submissions are due by April 25, 2025, and selected artists will receive a $500 stipend per sculpture. Selected pieces will be installed in prominent locations throughout downtown Concord and displayed from June 2025 through May 2026. Sculptures may also be available for sale, with a portion of proceeds reinvested in local visual arts programming.
The exhibit is part of “Art on Main,” an initiative launched in 2018 and expanded in 2022 to include areas beyond Main Street, making art more accessible citywide. Over the years, participating artists have gained valuable exposure, with several sculptures purchased by collectors and organizations for permanent installation.
Artists interested in applying can do so through the Chamber’s website, and are encouraged to submit up to two sculptures, along with high-quality images for jury review. All displayed artwork will be insured for the duration of the exhibit. To learn more or submit your work, visit concordnhchamber.com.
