January brought a mix of standout events, community milestones, and meaningful investment in the region’s future. From a high-profile culinary experience in the Lakes Region to new businesses joining Concord’s chamber and a transformational gift for a long-standing nonprofit, these were the stories readers spent the most time with last month.
A Winemaker, a Chef, and a Landmark Dinner on Winnisquam
The Lake Estate on Winnisquam hosted a momentous five course wine dinner featuring Kendall Jackson head winemaker Randy Ullom and New Hampshire chef Chris Viaud. The January 21 event paired wines from across Kendall Jackson’s portfolio with a menu designed specifically to complement each selection. The event offered guests both a dining experience and insight into the craft behind the wines.
Ullom guided attendees through each pairing, sharing perspectives shaped by more than three decades in winemaking. Chef Viaud focused on balance, texture, and flavor in the kitchen. Beyond the menu, the evening emphasized connection, with communal tables intended to create a shared, social experience. The dinner also marked the beginning of a broader slate of wine focused events planned at The Lake Estate in the months ahead.
Four New Businesses Join the Greater Concord Chamber
The Greater Concord Area Chamber of Commerce welcomed four new members in January, highlighting the range of services and experiences represented in the local economy. The new additions include:
Alnoba, a leadership and retreat center rooted in experiential learning and philanthropy,
DoubleTree by Hilton Concord Downtown, a full-service hotel anchoring Main Street hospitality,
Escape Room Concord NH, the state’s largest escape room venue, and,
The Olive Branch Medspa, a boutique medical aesthetics practice focused on personalized care.
Together, the businesses reflect Concord’s mix of tourism, wellness, entertainment, and mission-driven work, reinforcing the chamber’s role in supporting a diverse and evolving business community.
Mayhew Program Receives $1 Million Gift
One of the most significant local stories of the month came from the Mayhew Program, which received a $1 million donation through an estate gift from a longtime supporter. The contribution positions the tuition free program to expand its reach and strengthen long term sustainability through endowment growth.
Mayhew currently serves about 225 boys each year through a combination of a residential summer program and year round mentoring. However, demand far exceeds capacity. Executive Director Peter Saliba said the gift will support strategic growth, including potential facility expansion, additional staff, and improved compensation for employees. The donation also serves as a reflection of long standing community trust in Mayhew’s mission and impact.
