Recently, our team caught up with Tom Hayes, the visionary founder behind Portland, Maine’s Rubbish Doctor. Embodying the spirit of a true rubbish revolutionary, Tom opened up about his sustainability-driven aspirations, delving into the captivating origins of Rubbish Doctor and offering a glimpse into the promising future of the junk removal and demolition industry.
Can you tell us a bit about the history of the business?
Rubbish Doctor is a new brand, but something my sons and myself has had in the works for a few years
As the business owner or representative, what are you most proud of about your business?
The fact that we have a business model that puts the community and employees first, and profits follow when you do those two things first.
What do you enjoy most about your business?
Interacting with people, and when we help them complete a project in their home, and they free up space they’ve been meaning to get to for a while, it’s great to see how happy they are when we complete the project.
What challenges does your business face?
Having a focus on sustainability sometimes leads us to feel like we can do better to reach our sustainability goals. We always want to be doing better.
Handling the number of calls we’re getting and requests for work. We’re a new company, and we’re looking to hire. Growing with demand is a challenge.
Any fun stories that highlight your company’s culture?
It’s been fun when we get requests from our customers who know that when we have furniture or other items that people can use, we can deliver and set them up with it. We can give new life to furniture to veterans or the elderly, or anyone who can use the essentials that we take for granted.
Where do you see your company in five years?
I hope to be in multiple states, providing a top junk removal service with a sustainable approach that has a focus on employees, the planet, and our community.
