In a recent letter to voters, Hillsborough County Attorney John Coughlin emphasizes his dedication to “holding those who commit serious crimes accountable” and to ensuring justice for victims and their families. Coughlin highlights the core responsibilities of his role, which include collaborating with law enforcement across New Hampshire’s largest county to investigate and prosecute complex felony crimes.

“I’ve been advocating for justice for many years,” he writes, underscoring his extensive background in public service.

Coughlin’s experience as a Judge Advocate General during three tours in Iraq, where he “worked to rebuild the rule of law in a war-torn region,” is a testament to his commitment to upholding justice in the most challenging of circumstances. His work on the New Hampshire Human Rights Commission and as a Circuit Court Judge, he explains, further solidified his dedication to civil rights and fair outcomes.

Coughlin’s letter comes as he seeks another term, and he stresses the importance of continuity in his role. “The stability I’ve established with victims, courts, administration, and partner agencies has been a cornerstone of my tenure,” he states, suggesting that his deep-rooted connections within the community and legal system provide a necessary foundation for safety and justice.

Managing a team of over 60 professionals across Manchester and Nashua, Coughlin reflects on the demands of the office that go beyond legal matters, encompassing budgeting, human resources, and partnership-building. These responsibilities, he argues, require “experience and commitment,” attributes he believes he has demonstrated consistently.

“As we approach another term for County Attorney, the value of experience and consistency cannot be overstated,” Coughlin writes, appealing to voters to recognize the stability he has brought to the role. His call to action is clear: “I believe I’m the only reasonable choice to continue advocating for justice in Hillsborough County. If you feel the same, I ask for your vote on Tuesday.”

In a less than crowded political landscape, Coughlin’s message underscores a point many voters may weigh carefully: the significance of experience in maintaining justice and safety for New Hampshire’s largest county. His focus on both stability and accountability could resonate with those who value a steady hand at the helm, especially amid the ongoing challenges faced by the legal system. For Coughlin, this election is not just about winning another term but about preserving the hard-won progress his office has achieved.
