A good night’s sleep can be easy to take for granted until it becomes difficult. Trouble falling asleep, waking repeatedly or feeling exhausted in the morning can affect nearly every part of the day.

Quality sleep supports concentration, mood, energy, immune function and physical recovery. While most adults benefit from seven to nine hours each night, the quality and consistency of that sleep are equally important.

Start With a Consistent Schedule

The body follows an internal clock known as the circadian rhythm. Going to bed and waking up at approximately the same time each day can help reinforce that natural cycle.

Large changes between weekday and weekend schedules may make it harder for the body to recognize when it is time to rest. A realistic routine that can be followed most days is often more helpful than trying to catch up with an unusually long night of sleep.

A calming routine can also help signal that the day is ending. Reading, stretching, taking a warm shower, practicing slow breathing or listening to relaxing music can make the transition to bedtime feel more natural.

“People often start by looking for one quick solution, but healthy sleep usually begins with a consistent routine,” said Marty Donovan, Pharmacist, Clinical Nutritionist and founder of Natural Wellness Corner. “It is important to look at the whole picture, including stress, screen time, caffeine, nutrition, activity and the sleeping environment.”

Reduce Evening Stimulation

Phones, televisions and computers can keep the mind active when it should be winding down. Bright light in the evening may also interfere with the body’s natural preparation for sleep.

Putting devices away at least 30 minutes before bed can help. Those who cannot completely disconnect may still benefit from lowering screen brightness, using nighttime display settings and avoiding stressful or highly stimulating content.

The bedroom itself should be cool, quiet, dark and comfortable. Blackout curtains, an eye mask, a white-noise machine or supportive pillows can make the room more conducive to rest.

Pay Attention to Caffeine, Meals and Alcohol

Caffeine can remain active in the body for hours. Coffee, tea, energy drinks, soda, chocolate, pre-workout products and certain medications may all contain caffeine.

People experiencing sleep difficulties may want to avoid caffeine during the afternoon and evening. Those who are particularly sensitive may need to stop earlier in the day.

Large meals close to bedtime can contribute to discomfort, indigestion or reflux. Alcohol may initially cause drowsiness, but it can also interfere with sleep quality and contribute to waking during the night.

Stay Active and Manage Stress

Regular movement can support healthier sleep, energy regulation and stress management. Walking, strength training, yoga, gardening and other forms of activity can all help.

Morning sunlight may also reinforce the body’s sleep-wake cycle. Those who find that vigorous evening exercise makes them more alert may benefit from exercising earlier and reserving gentle stretching for nighttime.

Stress can become especially noticeable when the day grows quiet. Deep breathing, meditation, journaling and writing down the next day’s responsibilities can help calm a racing mind.

Where Supplements May Fit

Some people incorporate nutritional or hemp-derived products into their nighttime routines. Magnesium glycinate is commonly selected for its role in supporting normal muscle and nervous-system function.

Natural Wellness Corner offers Magnesium Glycinate as well as SomniVive+ CBD Sleep Gummies, which combine cannabinoids with melatonin, GABA and 5-HTP.

Supplements are not appropriate for everyone and should complement healthy habits rather than replace them. Anyone taking prescription medication, managing a health condition, or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should speak with a pharmacist or healthcare provider before beginning a new product.

Know When to Seek Help

Persistent sleep problems should not be ignored. Loud snoring, waking up gasping, overwhelming daytime sleepiness, uncomfortable leg sensations or regularly waking exhausted may indicate an underlying condition that requires professional evaluation.

Better sleep rarely comes from changing everything overnight. Starting with one or two manageable habits, such as maintaining a regular wake-up time or turning off screens before bed, can make the process more sustainable.

Natural Wellness Corner is located at 239 Loudon Road in Concord. Its team helps customers explore wellness products and develop practical routines based on their individual needs.
